Walking is reasonably feasible for house buyers in Southdale; many daily errands can be run on foot, and a good number of businesses of different types can be found as well. Biking is also convenient in this area as the cycling network is extensive. Travelling by transit can be occasionally difficult in Southdale due to the service's low frequency. Nonetheless, rapid transit stations, including Mill Station on the ION Light Rail, are not especially far away from the majority of homes in the neighbourhood. There are a few bus lines crossing the neighbourhood, and bus stops are not very far from most residences. However, driving is a very good means of transportation in this area. It is convenient to come across a parking spot, and nearby highways, such as Highway 7 & 8, are very easy to reach from any location in Southdale.

The nearest supermarket in Southdale is usually only a reasonably short walk away. Moreover, a restaurant is commonly just around the corner. With regards to education, both primary and secondary schools are easy to walk to from any location in Southdale. On the other hand, there are only a few daycares and consequently they can be a rather long walk away.

Southdale is an excellent neighbourhood to buy a house in for those who prefer a slower-paced environment. This area is very quiet overall, as there isn't a lot of street noise or city clamour. Lastly, most locations in the neighbourhood have reasonably good access to public green spaces, including Meinzinger Park and Lakeside Park Natural Area, since there are about 10 of them close by for residents to unwind in.

Small apartment buildings are the most common housing type, representing about half of dwellings in Southdale, while single detached homes make up most of the remaining housing stock.
