Situated within the Greater Hamilton metropolitan area, Central is a neighbourhood within Hamilton, Ontario.

Transportation

Central presents homeowners with the choice between various methods of transportation. Central is a very pleasant part of Hamilton for travelling by public transit by reason of West Harbour on the Lakeshore West, and about 30 nearby bus lines. It is also very easy for pedestrians to move around in this area; many day-to-day needs can be met without having to resort to a vehicle, and a fair number of businesses of different types can be found as well. Central is a fairly pleasant part of Hamilton for bike riders. More precisely, bike-share stations are seldomly more than a short distance away, and the cycling infrastructure is quite well-developed.

Services

It is a short walk to reach daycares and schools from anywhere in Central. Families have the choice between public and private elementary schools. As far as eating is concerned, it is very easy to access the closest supermarket on foot in Central. Furthermore, there is usually a restaurant or cafe just around the corner, for instance along James Street. It is also a reasonably short walk to a decent variety of clothing stores.

Character

Central offers a wide variety of green spaces to enjoy, despite its sometimes busy ambience. Public green spaces are very easy to reach since there are a few of them nearby for residents to explore. Lastly, quiet spots can be found throughout much of the neighbourhood, although that is not the case closer to one of the railway lines.

Housing

Most buildings are large apartment buildings, making it easy to find apartments in Central, whereas the rest are mainly small apartment buildings. This neighbourhood also has quite a good selection of unit sizes - there is a higher proportion of one bedroom homes in this neighbourhood. About three quarters of the population of this neighbourhood rent their home and one quarter are owners. Roughly one third of homes in this part of Hamilton were built in the 1960s and 1970s, while the majority of the remaining buildings were constructed pre-1960 and in the 2000s.
