Otter Lake

The community of Otter Lake is part of the municipality of Halifax, Nova Scotia, which is located in the Greater Halifax metropolitan area.

Transportation

Commuting by car is very easy in this area. Most homes for sale are a very short drive from the nearest highway, and it is very easy to park. It is very difficult for pedestrians to get around in this area since very few daily needs can be met by walking. Commuting by bicycle is also difficult in this part of the municipality as the bicycling infrastructure is not very well-developed, and there are a fair number of slopes to challenge cyclists.

Services

Otter Lake does not have any high schools or primary schools. Moreover, families may consider it very difficult for their schoolchildren to reach daycares on foot. Concerning food, in all cases, a car is required to buy groceries.

Character

Otter Lake offers a vast selection of green spaces to enjoy. A large number of locations within the community have reasonably good access to parks, including Western Commons, since there are around 20 of them nearby for residents to relax in. It remains relatively calm in this area, due to the presence of very few pedestrians.

Housing

Single detached homes are the predominant housing type, representing about two thirds of dwellings in Otter Lake, while mobile homes make up most of the remaining housing stock. This part of Halifax did not experience a single building boom; the construction of new homes in this community was spread throughout several decades in recent history. This area offers mainly four or more bedroom and three bedroom homes. Homeowners occupy around 90% of the dwellings in the community and the rest are rented.
