Sumas Prairie

Situated within the Abbotsford - Mission metropolitan area, Sumas Prairie is a neighbourhood in Abbotsford, British Columbia.

Transportation

The preferred means of transportation in this area is usually driving. It is especially convenient to access a place to park, and nearby highways, such as Sumas Offramp Way, are reasonably easy to drive to from any home in this part of Abbotsford. However, commuting by public transit is difficult in this neighbourhood. Nevertheless, there are a few bus lines crossing the neighbourhood, and the closest bus stop is typically just around the corner. Even though certain bicycling-friendly sectors can be found, it is challenging to get around by bicycle in Sumas Prairie since the bicycling network is not very extensive, and there are a good number of elevation changes for cyclists to brave. This part of the city is also not very suitable for those who travel by foot because running common errands is at times difficult by walking.

Services

In all but a very small number of cases, a vehicle is required to shop for groceries. Nevertheless, getting to the closest pharmacy and accordingly some staple foods is typically convenient. In terms of education, there are only a very small number of primary schools in this part of the city and accordingly they can be a very long walk away. Likewise, Sumas Prairie does not have any high schools. In addition, families may consider it very hard to reach daycares as a pedestrian.

Character

The character of Sumas Prairie is exemplified by its relaxed ambience. There are approximately 10 green spaces nearby for residents to relax in, such as Delair Park and Old Yale Trail, making it easy to access them. This area is also very good for those who enjoy quiet surroundings, as the streets are very calm - however noise can be problematic near the railway line, sumas way or Sumas Offramp Way.

Housing

The substantial percentage of single detached homes in the housing stock of Sumas Prairie is an important part of its character. About one quarter of properties in this part of the city were constructed in the 1960s and 1970s, while the majority of the remaining buildings were built pre-1960 and in the 1980s. This neighbourhood also has a selection of housing sizes; there is a higher proportion of four or more bedroom homes in this neighbourhood. Roughly 70% of the dwellings in the neighbourhood are occupied by homeowners and renters occupy the remainder.
